The Weekly Check In - with Kate Bingaman-Burt

(This is the Weekly Check In here on Rubin Recommends. With everyone being so busy, it’s fun to get a quick update from them and what they’ve been up to… short and sweet.)

I met Kate through her site, Obsessive Consumption back when I was living in Boston, maybe even Kansas. I’ve since just kept in touch, ran into her in New York, and followed everything she’s done. She’s always busy making something, so see if you can keep up. (and she has a really long name.)

Visit: http://obsessiveconsumption.com where you can see everything she does daily.

RR: What are you currently working on or just finished that you’re excited about?

Kate: Hey! I just finished a bunch of handlettering for the book Handmade Nation (coming out soon from Princeton Architectural Press) and I CANNOT wait for summer so I can start experimenting on some of the ideas that I have been collecting this semester (BIGGER work, LOTS of color, NEW website). I have also been doing freelance work for Madewell (new J.Crew owned boutiques)…drawing Madewell receipts, tote bags, tissue paper etc. Here’s a link to a new color purchase drawing.

RR: Where have you traveled so far this month?

Kate: I just got back from Athens, Georgia where I was a visiting artist. I conducted a zine workshop with a bunch of kids and met with graduate students AND gave a lecture. It was a blast! I am heading to Springfield, Missouri in a week to do it all over again at Missouri State. Here’s a link to the Zine Workshop photoset.

RR: What’s your favorite music right now?

Kate: The Dodos and Okkervil River. I saw Okkervil River in Athens while I was there. So not only am I listening to their new CD a lot but I am listening to Black Sheep Boy over and over again as well.

RR: Best food you’ve had in your neighborhood lately or while you were traveling?

Kate: The Grit in Athens, GA! I had an amazing grilled cheese sandwich! Oh and I had two tofu burritos that kicked my ass as well but I forget where I got them from. My favorite neighborhood food is a BLT with White Bean Ragu at Bin612 in Starkville, Mississippi.

RR: Anything Else You Want To Mention?

Kate: My husband (http://www.publicdesigncenter.org) and I are moving to Portland, Oregon at the end of July. I am going to be the new assistant professor of Graphic Design at Portland State and he will be working to find a new home for The Public Design Center. Adventure!
